"Make your heart like a lake with a calm, still surface and great depths of kindness."
- Lao Tzu
This was another travel day full of beautiful surprises. These are my favorite days.
We left Zion in a cloudy, foggy haze and didn't know where we would land today though we knew Knab was our general destination. We got a late start and were in no hurry to get anywhere.
What seemed like a random pitstop in the middle of nowhere, we pulled over to stretch our legs. We later found out we were not far from Kanab, UT. We took a short walk down this unassuming dirt road when we decided to take Fern along with us and see where it led.
After driving a couple of miles down that dirt road, little did we know... this was waiting for us! Just the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument! There were no signs or flashing lights, just a random dirt road leading to another incredible, awe-inspiring experience.
I was blown away that we could so randomly experience this incredible natural masterpiece. Surprisingly, we were the only ones here and could enjoy it without a crowd of people around. That is what I have loved so much about this trip... The beautiful unexpected.
This is another day I will never forget. Seeing it in pictures is one thing, but experiencing it in person is quite another. My heart is full. This reminded me again that time is the most valuable thing we own. I struggle with thinking everything has to be perfect before I begin, and that's the worst thing I can do. This trip has repeatedly shown me that there are great rewards to jumping in and doing something before you feel entirely ready; even though it's terrifying, it can be the greatest gift you can give yourself.
I can only say this is nature's beautiful version of sand art. It's out here waiting for anyone to see if you allow yourself to go off the beaten path and explore.
The road was a little (a lot) rough, but Fern is nothing but a trooper!
We rolled into Kanab to have a late lunch. It is a special place. There are slot canyons, caves, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, and more. While trying to decide what to do, we wandered into a bookstore and started talking to the people there. They suggested we check out Page, AZ. It was close by and was somewhat close to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was starting to snow in Kanab, so we thought we would travel south toward warmer weather. lol
As luck would have it, the clouds parted as we drove into Page and found our way to our home at Antelope Point RV Park. We arrived just in time to catch this gorgeous sunset. We could only enjoy it for a few minutes until we realized we were somehow locked out of Fern! I used a padlock to lock her up, but somehow the handle locked, and we could not unlock it with the key!
We ran into town and bought a saw and other things to rectify the situation. Of course, by now, it was dark and cold, and no one was having a good time. lol With the handle sawed off and a little finagling with a nail to open the door, we were somewhat safe and sound after a long day.
With the hectic evening behind us, we woke up to this. Page was not on my radar, but it should have been. This is a beautiful and unique place, and this is Lake Powell in the Lower Antelope Canyon.
I love this picture. I was captivated by how delicate each of these layers is; it was built layer upon layer and beautiful to see.
I remember sitting here thinking about several things. I was taking in how magical and peaceful raw nature can be. In the past, I would have passed by this without ever being drawn to explore it and appreciate its beauty. I thought I was a forest girl now, but I'm discovering there is beauty everywhere if you open yourself up to it.
Lake Powell is the second-largest reservoir in the United States. I can imagine at one time; the water was filled to the top of each side. It's pretty to see, but sad that the levels have dropped so significantly.
I woke up to this beautiful sunrise and knew it would be a great day. I am just so grateful for this sweet life I have been fortunate to create.
We picked up sandwiches from Subway and came here to enjoy the view while eating.
This beautiful lake is in crisis and could become a dead pool soon. It gets its water from the Colorado River, which has been decreasing for years, and sadly it's unlikely to refill in the coming decades. If you want to witness this gorgeous lake, you should do it soon before it is no longer here to enjoy.
I love this picture and keep returning to it because I am mesmerized by the stillness of the beautiful blue water against the marble canyons in the background. Someone once asked me my favorite color, and I replied, "Blue, I guess." They wanted to know what shade of blue, and now I know... It's "Lake Powell" blue.
This is Castle Rock. It towers 600 feet above Lake Powell and becomes an island when the lake is full. Sadly, who knows if that will ever happen again. It's just stunning.
As with every place I've been, I could have stayed much longer, but the Grand Canyon awaits us. I'm so excited about this next adventure.
Next stop... The Grand Canyon!
